Iowa City Police Arrest Suspect in West High School Bomb Threat

Tuesday morning (1/19), Iowa City West High School was evacuated after a bomb threat was called into the John County Emergency Communications Center. Today, Iowa City Police say they've made an arrest in the case.

The bomb threat was made at 8:40 Tuesday morning and forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 students to another location so the school could be searched for dangerous devices.

Through investigation, the Iowa City Police Department was able to recover the phone where the 911 call originated after the suspect was arrested on a different charge. The suspect has been identified as Clifton Rayner Brinkmeyer, date of birth October 14, 1985. His address is listed as 739 Perry Court in Iowa City. Brinkmeyer has already been charged with the robbery of the U.S. Bank at 1117 William Street in Iowa City the same morning. The bank was robbed at 9:04 Tuesday morning, just over 20 minutes after the bomb threat call was received.

Brinkmeyer has been charged with Threat of Terrorism, a Class D felony. He was charged Tuesday with Robbery in the Second Degree, a class C felony, involving the U.S. Bank robbery in which witnesses say he used a gun. The Iowa City Police Department later found a plastic gun, believed to be used in the robbery. Brinkmeyer posted bond for that charge but has now been arrested again on the Threat of Terrorism charge. He remains in custody in the Johnson County Jail.
