Iowa Man Robs Bank On A Dare, It Doesn’t Go Well

An Iowa man is behind bars following what was a very poorly planned, and possibly even a spur-of-the-moment bank robbery.

Court documents indicate that 35-year-old Ronald G. Edwards of Sioux City tried to rob the Great Southern Bank at 329 Pierce Street in Sioux City at approximately 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, March 31. Things didn't go well.

According to Siouxland Proud, Edwards first attempted to rob the bank on March 3. He reportedly said that day that he'd “shoot up the bank and everyone in it.” Thankfully, no one was injured and Edwards took off before he got any cash that day. Apparently, that led Edwards and an acquaintance named Jon Boggs to get into a disagreement about whether either of them would ever rob a bank. Edwards decided to try again, this time taking Boggs with him.

When Edwards entered the bank on March 31, Siouxland Proud reports he had a bandana over his face, but an employee that Edwards had threatened to shoot during the March 3 robbery attempt recognized him as the same man.

After getting cash from the bank, Siouxland Proud says Edwards gave $100 to Boggs and told him to "keep his mouth shut and work as a lookout."

Police caught up with the men outside, and Edwards was in possession of $1,242 in cash. Most of the cash had pre-recorded serial numbers on it, known as "bait money."

Edwards reportedly admitted to the bank robbery, attempted robbery, and the discussions between Boggs and himself to police after being arrested. He's been charged with 1st Degree Robbery and is being held at the Woodbury County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
