
Cedar Rapids Teen Charged in Iowa City Ped Mall Shooting
Five people were injured during a shooting last weekend on the Ped Mall in Iowa City. Now, a teenager from Cedar Rapids is facing charges in the case.
Cedar Rapids Teen Wanted in Shooting Case
The Des Moines Register reports that a Cedar Rapids teen is responsible for the shooting early Sunday morning at the Ped Mall in Iowa City that left five people injured. Iowa City police say that 17-year-old Damarian M. Jones allegedly fired a gun six times into a crowd of people at the Ped Mall. Five people suffered gunshot wounds. Jones has not yet been arrested.
Teen Facing Multiple Charges
The Register reports that Jones has been charged with five counts of attempted murder, and according to the Johnson County Attorney's office, he will be tried as an adult. Iowa City Police say they have obtained three firearms through search warrants. They have also acquired firearms accessories and multiple rounds of ammunition. The Register reports that police say more charges are expected to be filed.
Some Victims Remain in the Hospital
Three of the five wounded were students at the University of Iowa. The Register reports that one person remains in critical condition after being shot in the head. One person is listed in stable condition, and three others have been released from the hospital.
Police say that the shooting was the result of an early morning fight on Sunday, April 19th, that involved over 40 people.
The Register reports that Iowa City police will increase their presence in the downtown area.
