WATCH: Video Shows Devastating Tornado Damage to Jefferson City, MO
The enormous tornado that hit Missouri's capital city late Wednesday evening caused a massive amount of damage. About a 3-mile area of Jefferson City was hit by the tornado. The National Weather Service says the "wedge" tornado (wider than it is tall), went debris about 13,000 feet high... that's 2.46 miles! The capitol building itself wasn't spared as you'll see in the video below.
Thankfully, no one lost their life in Jefferson City this morning, but three deaths have been reported from a separate tornado in Golden City. That town is located in the southwest corner of Missouri. Tuesday night, an Iowa woman was killed by a tornado in Adair. The storm system has spawned over 130 tornadoes in the last five days.
Here in Iowa, unfortunately, it appears a wet Memorial Day weekend is ahead. Thunderstorms are expected to develop again tonight, with the possibility of heavy rain. Storms Friday into Saturday night may produce very heavy rain, according to the National Weather Service. The greatest risks are large hail and damaging winds. However, there's a chance of isolated tornadoes. That risk is low, but please stay aware of changing conditions.
Unfortunately, more severe weather is possible Monday and Tuesday.
