A horrific accident Thursday morning in Urbandale claimed the life of a longtime employee of Urbandale High School. According to KCCI, the woman killed had worked in the school's nutrition services department for 17 years.

The woman was struck by a vehicle before 7 a.m. Thursday while walking in a crosswalk near Aurora Avenue and 72nd Street, directly across from Urbandale High School. She later died. The driver of the vehicle did stop and was cooperative with police.

The victim has been identified as 62-year-old Dawn Ipson. The driver of the vehicle has not been named and no charges have been filed. The investigation continues.

In a statement obtained by We Are Iowa, Urbandale Superintendent Steve Bass said,

Dawn has been a highly valued member of our Urbandale team since 2001, and will be deeply missed by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Our UHS team will be informing high school students tomorrow morning with a prepared statement. Counseling support will be provided at the high school and will continue to be provided as long as needed.
