Authorities Confirm Casualties in Greenfield, Iowa Tornado

Severe storms and numerous tornadoes swept across the state of Iowa yesterday. While many areas suffered storm damage, no community was hit harder than the southwest Iowa town of Greenfield.

The fast-moving tornado tore through the small Iowa town on Tuesday, leaving a path of destruction behind it. Drone footage shows the clear path of the tornado as it made its way through the Adair County town yesterday.

At a press conference on Tuesday evening, the Iowa State Patrol confirmed the worst possible news. There were multiple casualties in Greenfield, according to KCCI. The State Patrol says that an official number won't be released until later today. While search efforts continue, officials believe everyone in the town of about 2,000 people is accounted for.

KCCI reports that a mandatory curfew is in effect and likely will be for several more days. The State Patrol also says that no one will be allowed into the city unless they have a Greenfield address on their ID. A reunification point has been set up for survivors and is located at Nodoway Valley High School. It is also serving as a temporary shelter for Greenfield residents.

Compounding issues is that the Adair County Health System hospital in Greenfield suffered damage in the storm. A spokesperson for Mercy One told KCCI that they have not released any further details about the condition of the hospital. Officials also say a retirement community was hit by the tornado on Tuesday.

A disaster proclamation has been authorized by Governor Kim Reynolds for 15 Iowa counties impacted by yesterday's severe weather.
