Drake University is set to become the first Iowa college to offer beer sales during men's and women's basketball games. The school announced this week that the selection will include a number of national brands as well as local craft beers. Sales will begin this Thursday as Drake hosts Buena Vista.

For many, the reason to sell beer seems obvious. Revenue. But officials at Drake sight state law that allows them to only retain 9.9% of alcohol revenues. No, the sale of beer is all about the fan experience. School officials say they wanted to offer longtime fans a better game experience and they wanted a way to drawn new fans into the Knapp center for Drake games.

The beer stands at Drake are in the lobby area when you first walk in, with another in the northeast atrium. Patrons may purchase them and take them back to their seats, including into the student section. Beer sales will end in the third quarter of women's games and midway through the second half of men's games.

Iowa and Iowa State only sell alcohol to fans with special tickets in reserved areas. UNI began selling to adults last season, but fans are NOT allowed to take the beverages to their seats and must drink in designated areas.
