You Can See the Renaissance That’s Coming to the Amana Colonies, It’s Medieval!
One of the first radio jobs I had was in Vermont. Beautiful state if you ever get a chance to visit. I once did a remote on Killington Mountain, I think it may have been the inaugural or second-augural Renaissance Fair there. I came from the DC area and there was a huge Renaissance fair there, every year, and I never went. I heard about it because they were kind enough to advertise with us. It seemed fun but I was busy all those years.
What's the deal with Ren Fair cast members?
Back to Vermont and the first or second Ren Fair. I set up my gear and had some questions, but no one from the fair was nearby. I asked a question of a cast member and was greeted with “What does this thing in your hand do?” I had a microphone in my hand at the time. I explained I’m sure you’re aware it’s a microphone. That was where I expected it to end and..... it...... did, not. I asked the question again and this time I was accused of being a sorcerer who was trying to do something or other and I felt I was in some kind of medieval trouble. Once our remote began a co-worker, Aimee, arrived to school me on the Ren Fair way. The cast members don’t break character for anything or at least they’re not supposed to. Oh, well, they don’t mention that in the literature I didn’t read.
There's a need for jousting in the Greater Cedar Rapids area
So, long story, even longer. There’s gonna be a Renaissance fair in Amana Colonies. I think it’s the only place you’ll find a good joust. You’re probably thinking, there’s gotta be better jousting somewhere. Oh yeah, where? Downtown, Cedar Rapids? I heard a new hotel might be popping up but random jousting is doubtful. So, this is your opportunity. See a few people tossed from a horse while munching on a turkey leg, mmm, good times.
What does the Amana Colonies have to say about the event?
The Amana Colonies is hosting this jousting good time and this is what they have to say about it “Middle Amana Community Park hosts the Iowa Renaissance Festival twice a year, in the spring and fall, where you can experience a lively medieval atmosphere. Explore six living history encampments and an artisan merchant village, and get into the spirit by dressing in full costume. Enjoy craft demonstrations, comedy shows, knights battling in combat, and plenty of kid-friendly activities. Discover what life was like in ancient times, savor a variety of interesting and tasty foods at the royal food court, and relax in the beer garden.” You had me at the beer garden. I know it was kinda near the end but it still had me, what about you?
