Iowa Hospitals Get National Recognition in New Rankings

If there's anything this pandemic has taught us, it's to prioritize our health above all else, and knowing your local medical facility is ranked among the best, it can be a burden off your shoulders. U.S. News and World Report recently put out a ranking of the top medical facilities in Iowa.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) was ranked #1 in the state (and 15th in the midwest), followed by Des Moines' MercyOne Medical Center.

UIHC Gained NATIONAL Recognition in Four Adult Specialty Categories

U.S. News and World Report evaluate approximately 5,000 hospitals nationwide on common inpatient procedures and conditions. Heart failure, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and heart attack treatment were areas where the UIHC gained scores of 5/5. Stead Family Children's Hospital did well in its own right, nationally ranked in 5 care categories.

Unity Point-St. Luke's ranked as "high performing" in 9 procedures/conditions

Also near the top was Unity Point-St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. Iowa's News Now says St. Luke's ranks third-best in the state in treating the most challenging patients.

While not ranked nationally, they did earn high marks in nine different care categories: stroke, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart attack, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, kidney failure, hip and knee replacement.

Their Cedar Rapids counterpart wasn't far behind

Mercy Medical Center, on the other hand, came in 5th, ranking as a high performer in 6 categories.
