Uber Could Be Coming to Iowa City Soon

Iowans that use the driving service Uber might be able to travel a little bit farther thanks to a vote by the Iowa City Council.

Three months ago, Uber representatives tried to revive the conversation with Iowa City representatives about bringing the service to town. Apparently, that conversation stuck. Last night, the Iowa City Council approved an ordinance amendment (6-1) that basically loosens restrictions for ride-sharing companies in the city. Uber could have already been operating as of last year, but the company refused to work under the initial ordinance. According to the Iowa City Press-Citizen:

"The amendment lifts requirements for background checks for drivers performed by the police department, city-issued identification cards for individual drivers and eliminates a requirement for inspection of vehicles newer than 10 years."

Not surprisingly, taxi companies are not happy about this, but city staff members plan to meet with them to discuss the changes.

There's no word yet on when Uber will be able to start up their services in the city.
