Packer Fans Mourn The Loss Of Bart Starr
As a Green Bay Packer fan, we've been blessed with some incredible talent at the quarterback position. We get to watch Aaron Rodgers sling it every Sunday. We watched Brett Favre carry the franchise to a Super Bowl title and back to national relevance. But there is only one all-time great Packer quarterback to win FIVE NFL titles. Bart Starr.
Compared to the throw it on every down NFL that we watch today, Starr's numbers certainly wouldn't wow you. Except for the ones that matter. Like a 9-1 playoff record. Yes, Starr lost his first playoff game and would never lose again. Like 5-0 in NFL title games and Super Bowls. How about MVP of Super Bowls 1 and 2. He was the leader of Lombardi's Packers. His calm, cool demeanor helped that team make NFL history.
Starr was at his best during the biggest games. During the 1967 NFL Championship, called The Ice Bowl, Starr passed for two touchdowns with the temperature at -13 degrees and scored the game-winning touchdown on a quarterback sneak. A play he CHANGED at the line of scrimmage from what Lombardi called during the timeout!
But even greater than all the stories of his greatness on the field, were the stories of all the lives he touched off the field. A gentleman who never said no to a fan. A man who despite his home in Alabama, loved Green Bay and loved what it meant to the NFL.
There are many legends that can call Lambeau Field home. But there will only ever be ONE Bart Starr. Rest in peace, # 15.
