Nile Kron, Beloved Friend of the KHAK Radiothon, Has Passed Away

We know that we aren't supposed to have favorite kids who visit us during our annual radiothon at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. But how could you not fall in love with Nile Kron? Despite all the challenges his little body faced, he always had a smile on his face and wanted you to have just as much fun as he was having! It pained us to learn this week that 9-year-old Nile Kron has passed away.

We've visited with Nile and his family for years at our radiothon. Since he was a toddler, Nile's story has inspired countless listeners. How could you not be amazed at everything he had overcome? Nile was born prematurely at Stead. He had a cleft lip, scoliosis, and could not hear. He spent over 50 days in the NICU. And at just one week old, Nile's heart stopped three times during an MRI. Hospital staff saved his life. Nothing was going to stop Nile from being a champion!

As the years progressed, Nile had more surgeries to repair his palate, ears, and spine. He even got cochlear implants and learned how to talk using sign language. He was a walking inspiration.

Nile was chosen to be a Kid Captain for the Iowa Hawkeye football team for the 2023 Cy-Hawk game. When Iowa won the game, players pulled Nile down out of the stands to celebrate with the team.

We last got to see Nile at this year's radiothon in Iowa City in August. His dad Rick shared an update on the air with us, and Nile did what he always did. Brightened every room he walked into. Smiled that silly smile and reminded us that miracles do happen.

Nile Kron passed away Tuesday night from injuries suffered in an ATV accident, according to his obituary. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Iowa City, with Mass the following day at 10:30 a.m.
