Linn County Home Currently For Sale Was Built Before City Was Founded [PHOTOS]

You're looking at a piece of Linn County history. This home was constructed 25 years before the city it stands in was incorporated, and just 11 years after Linn County was created.

The house above was built by John Neidig, the grandson of a Swiss immigrant who had settled in Pennsylvania. In the late 1840s, John Neidig and his wife Nancy moved to Iowa.

According to 'A Biography of John Neidig', Neidig bought a two-hundred-acre farm near what would become Mount Vernon. In 1850, he built this two-story brick home in Lisbon, which wouldn't become incorporated as a city until 1875. More on that home that's currently for sale in just a moment.

The same year Neidig built the home at 223 W. Main Street in Lisbon, his son-in-law Daniel Runkle and his wife built this home next door, at 227 W. Main Street (photo below). It also is still standing today, though it's not for sale.

While Neidig farmed, Daniel Runkle and John Kurts (Neidig's brother-in-law) ran a farm supply store. Runkle was also a preacher at the United Brethren Church in Lisbon. He would later become a farmer, and eventually got into the hardware business.

It is believed both John Neidig and Daniel Runkle lived in Lisbon until their passing.
