More Smoking Restrictions Could be Coming to Johnson County
Laws that are already in place in Coralville and North Liberty could be coming to Iowa City next.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors is looking to change up some of the smoking laws within the county, which could make things much more difficult for smokers. Not only would they like to ban e-cigarettes in public places just like regular cigarettes, but they would also like to enact the same "25-foot-rule" that they already have in Coralville and North Liberty. The rule requires smokers to be at least 25-feet away from all public buildings when lighting up. If Iowa City agrees to this ordinance, supervisors would then attempt to make the rule for the entire county.
Doug Beardsley, the director of public health in Johnson County, doesn't have an exact timeline, but he would like to see the new laws in place within the next few months.
