January 19, 1993 was one of the worst nights of my career. I was doing the seven to midnight shift on 98.1 KHAK when I answered a phone call that would literally take my breath away. There had been a terrible accident and my favorite Iowa Hawkeye, Chris Street, had been killed. A very difficult call to Bob Brooks followed. He was even more shaken than I was. Then, after confirming, we had to make the announcement. It wasn't easy. Those things never are and unfortunately, I've had to report horrible things many times over the years. Still, almost none of them have hit me as hard as this one did.

Chris Street. When I think of him all these years later I still remember his smile and his fight. He gave every single ounce of everything he had. He was Iowa through and through and we loved him. God how we loved him. Today, all these years later, we get to show that love to his family and all of his teammates who return for what will undoubtedly be a very special time at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

These two videos follow Chris' life before the University of Iowa, his career, and his untimely death. They're both very well done.

During halftime of today's Iowa men's basketball game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena there will be a video and center court presentation looking back at Chris' life and the legacy he's left behind. Street's parents, family, teammates, coaches, and staff from the 1993 team will be in attendance. Former Hawkeye players who've won the Chris Street Award will also be there.

Iowa players will wear Chris Street shooting shirts during pregame today. Coaches will wear lapel pins and Chris' #40 Jersey will cover an empty chair on the Iowa bench. Fans are encouraged to wear white. #40 white shirts will be for sale today and white wristbands with "CMS - Forever 40" will be handed out to fans, while they last.

The task will be tall today for the Iowa men's basketball team. The opponent for the 11 a.m. tipoff on ESPN is the third-ranked Purdue Boilermakers. Still, even 25 years later, I believe Iowa will have an extra player on their side.
