Crews with the City of Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department had a chilly task on Wednesday afternoon. While temperatures were falling and wind chills were becoming an issue, crews were spraying water and making sure that ice skating rinks in city parks are soon ready to use.

CBS2 reports that city crews were filling ice rinks on the tennis courts at both Jones and Noelridge Parks yesterday. If you're wondering if this is later than usual for that activity to take place, you'd be right. They had to delay a bit this year after some of the retaining walls for the rinks were damaged in the December derecho. They're all fixed up now and just waiting for a long stretch of weather with below-freezing temperatures.

Cedar Rapids Parks superintendent Mitch Ahrendsen told CBS2 that Jones Park will be filled through Thursday and that they hope to have enough ice at both rinks to start skating next Monday. Keeping the rinks in good shape takes a lot of work and upkeep. Ahrendsen says that crews will be adding water to the rinks almost daily.

Ice skating rinks at the parks are free for the public to use, just bring your own skates. The City says that the rinks are also ADA accessible. Make sure and dress in layers too before you head out to skate this winter!
