It's almost time to open the gates at the metro area's third outdoor dog park. The Hiawatha Dog Park has its ribbon-cutting this week!

The Hiawatha Dog Park, which is located just south of Boyson Road adjacent to the Cedar Valley Nature Trail, has its ribbon-cutting Wednesday at noon. The park opens to four, and two-legged, visitors immediately afterward.

Hiawatha Parks and Recreation Director Kelly Willadsen tells me that, for now, dog owners will not have to purchase passes to use the park. All owners are asked to carry up-to-date vaccination records with them when they are in the dog park.

The approximate 2-acre Hiawatha Dog Park is a public-private partnership between Dave Wright Auto, Linn County Conservation, and the City of Hiawatha.

There are two other outdoor dog parks in the Cedar Rapids metro. They are both located in Cedar Rapids: Cheyenne and at K9 Acres at Squaw Creek Park. Both require dog park permits.

An indoor dog park, one day each week beginning this fall, was recently announced. It will be at Hawkeye Downs and is scheduled to open in October.

You can see pictures of the new Hiawatha Dog Park, taken last week, and a brochure that includes all rules below. I know there are a lot of people, myself included, who are excited for it to open.
