A Popular Corridor Farmers Market Bakery is Opening Its First Storefront
If you've been to any of the Iowa City Farmers Markets in the last five years, then you might recognized the name 'Bread Worthy Bakery.' The popular at-home bakery has been a market staple for the past five years, but now, they're going to be open year-round! A new article from The Cedar Rapids Gazette says that Bread Worthy Bakery is going to be opening a storefront in Iowa City this summer!
About Bread Worthy Bakery
According to the website, Bread Worthy Bakery got its start at the Iowa City Farmers Market back in May of 2021. The owners, Colleen Brennan and Erick Dole, actually met at a pastry school in Italy in 2012, and spent years traveling and working around the world to "perfect their craft." In 2020, the couple moved to Iowa City, Erick's hometown, and got to work starting their bakery.
Erick's main focus at Bread Worthy is the pastries. The business' site refers to him as the "croissant master," but he's also the guy behind the cinnamon and pecan rolls. And then there's Colleen, who "fully manages all aspects of running the bakery." She's the one who comes up with weekly specials and new croissant flavors, and makes all of the baked goods that farmers market-goers have come to love!
The Baked Goods
When it comes to their products, Bread Worthy Bakery uses very specific, high-quality ingredients. The official site reads:
"The base of almost all of our products starts with beautiful organic stone ground flour from Janie’s Mill and farm just over the state border in Ashkum, Illinois. We also use all local eggs from fellow market vendor 6 Acre Farms, source high quality chocolates, and for all of our croissants, use specialty French butter from Isigny, France."
In addition to the previously-mentioned croissants, cinnamon rolls, and pecan rolls, some of the other items that Bread Worthy offers include pie, cake, cookies, candy, bread, scones, brownies, cheesecake, and more.
About the New Storefront
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Bread Worthy Bakery will be moving into the former home of Goosetown Cafe at 203 N Linn St in Iowa City's Northside Neighborhood. It's kind of a full circle moment, since the building also housed a bakery called Union Bakery when it first opened in the 1860s!
As of right now, there is no official timeline for the opening of Bread Worthy Bakery's new storefront, but they hope to open this summer. In the meantime, you can try some of their products at Daydrink on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. You'll also be able to check them out every weekend at the Iowa City Farmers Market from May through October. Bread Worthy also has two 'home bakes' left for the season for St. Patrick's Day and Easter, which means you'll be able to pre-order specific items for home pick-up. You can check out the home bake schedule and read more about how to order HERE.
