One of our children is celebrating a birthday today. Not Chase, Carly or Cayleigh. It's Rigby! Our miniature schnauzer is turning the big 6 today. He opened up his present last night and loves his new stuffed raccoon toy! Rigby has brought so much fun and joy to our house that I can't remember life without him.

We brought Rigby home on my wife's birthday in February of 2013. We got him from a couple who raised schnauzers in the Minneapolis area. We met in just to the north of the Waterloo area and we met our little boy for the first time. We took him home and he fit in right away.

I'd never had an indoor dog before so it took a while for me to get in sync with Rigby on the whole needing to go to the bathroom outside thing. It was if he was actually training me! We learned a lot about his breed early on too. It turns out that schnauzers are neurotic little beasts! We also learned that Rigby must be part Italian because the dude digs his marinara. Any leftover red sauce must be disposed of or hidden. He will find it, he will make a mess, and you will be angry.

The best thing about Rigby is how he has always gotten along with the kids. He loves them. He'll play with them with his toys, and he'll sleep with them on a comfy blanket. Come to think of it, Rigby pretty much goes to whoever has the best blanket!

So happy birthday to man's best friend, and the best pet I've ever had. You are loved, buddy. Just please....stay out of the trash!
