When someone talks about a police dog, a certain image probably comes to mind. Perhaps a drug or bomb sniffing dog, or a canine unit complete with a protective vest. In Marion, there is a new dog on the force whose job will be a bit different. Meet Dexter!

Marion Police to Deploy a Crisis Response Dog

Dexter might be a puppy right now, but he is already in training for his important role with the Marion Police Department. CBS2 reports that Dexter will become the first crisis response with the Marion Police Department. He'll eventually be licensed as a therapy dog in the state of Iowa once his training is complete. His partner will be Officer Benjamin Bartlett, who was selected to handle and train Dexter, according to CBS2.

What Will Dexter Be Trained to Do?

CBS2 reports that Dexter will be trained to assist at area schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and other places where a calming influence could be just what is needed. Officer Bartlett stated, "He'll be used anywhere in or around Marion where they think a dog could help people." Sounds like Dexter could be busy!

When Will Dexter Start His New Job?

Dexter is still an officer in training! CBS2 reports that he needs to grow older and complete several programs to prove that he has the right temperament and can do the job. Officer Bartlett is enjoying his new partner, stating, "He's young, curious, and fun to have around." Bartlett told CBS2 that he hopes the new program establishes a strong foundation for future crisis response efforts in Marion.
