That is my Barry boy. Our adopted dog from Texas. We brought him to our home in Marion nearly one year ago. I've talked a lot about the early struggles and how long it took for Barry to feel comfortable with our family. Now, in 2026, I want Barry to take another step forward.

Finally Comfortable in Our Home

Barry continues to get more and more comfortable in our house. At first, he wouldn't leave his one spot by our couch. Now, he is ON the couch, in the dining room, and will even occasionally venture into the kitchen! Granted, he smells us cooking food, so who could blame him? He even ventures into the hallway near Chase's bedroom, and the door upstairs to where our daughters are. He knows right when they're coming downstairs!

But perhaps the most heartwarming development is that Barry will hop on the couch right next to me, and if I'm not paying enough attention to him, he'll reach his paw out, as if to say, "Dad...put your phone down...it's Barry time!" How can you say no to those eyes?

Yes, he still gets jumpy around certain noises and is uncertain of new objects and decorations, but Barry has come a long way. Far enough that I want him to take another step forward.

Its Time to Explore Life Outside of the House

I take Barry on a walk on any day that I can stand the temperatures outside. We don't go very far, and our route is the same every time. We were encouraged to keep his routine consistent to help him adjust to his new home. But now, I feel like we need to go new places, whether it's as simple as a farther distance, or a new route altogether.

I also want him to get more comfortable in the car. He's been on several rides and did very well, even enjoying himself! I just want him to feel comfortable in a vehicle so that we can go more places together!

I understand that Barry might not ever be truly comfortable with everyone, or in every situation. But as we approach one year together, I can see so many fun things that lie ahead. We just have to continue to take things slow and introduce those new things at a pace that Barry is comfortable with. At least now he knows just how much he is loved.
