A farm in West Branch is supplying local restaurants with an interesting new meat option.

If you've ever wondered what Alpaca tastes like, you'll soon be able to find out. The Tuscan Moon Grill on Fifth in Kalona is going to be adding Alpaca meat to the menu. The meat will be supplied by Frerichs Alpaca Farm in West Branch. Tracey Frerichs, the owner of the farm, says they are the first ones in the state to start selling the meat. He told KCRG:

"Help people understand that this is a very nutritious meat. It's 98 percent lean. It has the highest protein content of any meat on the market."

And if you're wondering if the owners of Tuscan Moon Grill on Fifth have tried the meat, the answer is yes. Warren Miller, co-owner of the Kalona restaurant, said to KCRG, "It's not for everyone but I think there's a certain segment that will like it and I think it will be a very successful item." He added, "Once you cook it on the rare side, it's delicious. It tastes like beef to me but it has a bit more of a sweeter taste to it." The meat will be added to their menu in the next few weeks.

Personally, this isn't a meat I'm interested in trying. I think I may have pet one too many Alpacas in my life. What do you think? Would you eat Alpaca meat? Share your thoughts in the comments.
