The flag you see above is one of my most prized possessions. It came from the casket of my grandfather. He served in World War 2. I wasn't able to make it to his funeral, so my family decided to give me his folded flag. I'll cherish it forever. It was one of those moments in my life that really drove home how lucky we are to live in the country we do. Today on Veterans Day, we honor all who have served, or who are still serving in our armed forces. And given what our nation has gone through recently, we could use a good reminder right now.

My father in law Greg, served with the Marine Corp in Vietnam. He was part of a generation of American soldiers that didn't get the ticker tape parade. He didn't get the welcome home ceremony. As I got to know him better over the years, I became more comfortable asking him questions about what he saw and what happened while he served. He isn't comfortable sharing everything he saw, but you can tell there are many things he won't ever be able to forget. He has shown us his uniforms and medals and pins and you can still tell he is proud that he served. As well he should be.

I often wondered that when I had kids of my own how I would feel if they wanted to join the military. We don't live in a safe world. Our troops are in danger around the world and could be called to action at any time. But if they are truly passionate about serving, how could I ever object. Many people will tell you our nation is divided and at odds right now. But the one thing we can all rally around our veterans. They have fought to allow us all to have our freedom of speech, our freedom of religion, all of our freedoms. Say thank you to one today.

Thank you grandpa....thank you Greg. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
