Marion Pays Tribute to Local Veterans With Military Banner Display
Memorial Day is a day that honors our fallen soldiers who sacrificed everything for our nation. Many cities held ceremonies honoring that sacrifice. But many communities around Eastern Iowa are continuing to honor our veterans and service members, including one in Marion that you'll see every time you drive through the city.
Tribute Banners Go Up in Marion
For the ninth year, the City of Marion, Marion Chamber of Commerce, and the Uptown Marion Main Street District have put up military banners that honor local veterans with ties to the Marion community, according to KWWL. The program is designed to recognize and show appreciation for area veterans. According to the City of Marion, each banner features the honoree's military photo, name, branch, and dates of service.
How Many Banners Are There?
KWWL reports that this year, there are 80 banners on display throughout Marion. The City of Marion notes that they can be found on decorative streetlight poles from Memorial Day through Veterans' Day in November. The city even provides a map that tells you where each veteran's banner can be found. You can view the map HERE.
How to Get a Banner for Next Year
According to the City of Marion, banner sales are done on a first-come, first-served basis. You can fill out a form HERE, and be notified when the banners go on sale in February of 2027. The cost of each banner is $200. That includes design/production, installation, and care, plus a donation to local veterans' programs.
