Marking a special moment in time

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, The Veterans Memorial Commission Museum revealed its inaugural ‘World War Two’ exhibit. The timing couldn't have been more fitting, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, a pivotal event where countless U.S. soldiers embarked on the arduous journey to liberate France and ultimately secure victory in World War Two. Among the attendees were numerous local veterans and their families, gathered to pay homage to this significant chapter in history.

Present for the event

Among those present was Staff Sergeant Mike Bisek, a remarkable 101-year-old veteran who enlisted in the military at the age of 19. Though stationed in Italy during the time of D-Day, his recollection of the event remains vivid, a testament to the enduring impact of that momentous day. Reflecting on his service, he expressed a profound sense of honor in representing his country during such a pivotal time.

Jean Glaza shared her connection to D-Day, honoring her late husband Jerry, a valiant World War Two soldier who meticulously documented his wartime experiences. From evading German aircraft to participating in reconnaissance missions over Belgium, Jerry's firsthand accounts, along with cherished mementos like his flight jacket, now find a home in this memorial, ensuring his story lives on.
