West Liberty Cancels Classes After Many Staff Members Have Vaccine Side-Effects

Iowa News Now reports that due to a lack of staff, West Liberty Community School District has cancelled classes Monday.

What's causing the lack of staff? The report states that it appears many staff members are dealing with side-effects from COVID-19 vaccines that they received recently. The school cancelled virtual learning as well.

West Liberty Community School District responded on their Facebook post that "many of our staff members received their 2nd COVID vaccine on Saturday and are experiencing side effects. We plan to be back in school on Tuesday, March 9th when our staff members are feeling better." We hope they feel better soon.

Starting today, even more groups are eligible for vaccines. KCRG reports that persons under 64 "with underlying health conditions" are now eligible to receive vaccines. Despite the option to now get vaccinated, those groups may still have to wait as Linn County Public Health says they may not be ready to accommodate until next Monday, March 15. KCRG reports that Linn County Public Health is unsure about when additional supplies of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine will arrive, possibly not until late March. That, combined with a large part of the population having underlying health conditions and having to prove it, wait times are expected to increase.

In the meantime though, those under 64 with underlying health conditions can likely get vaccinated at first-come, first-serve pharmacies since they receive their supply from the federal government. You can read more about the underlying health conditions and vaccine availability here.
