A merger between cellular companies is expected to be finalized soon, and that deal will result in thousands of layoffs including here in Eastern Iowa.

The Corridor Business Journal reports that cellular provider UScellular plans to lay off an estimated 4,100 workers nationwide as part of its acquisition by T-Mobile. That will include employees at several company-owned stores in Iowa. According to a letter from last month, UScellular will be parting ways with remote employees as well as employees at corporate-owned UScellular locations according to the CBJ. The layoffs are expected to begin on June 2nd.

The CBJ reports that the layoffs at UScellular will affect employees at corporate-owned stores in Cedar Rapids, Coralville, and Iowa City. It will also include a call center on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. Officials with UScellular stated that the majority of affected employees would be offered positions with T-Mobile with similar wages and benefits.

T-Mobile agreed to acquire UScellular in 2024 in a deal valued at an estimated $4.4 billion according to the CBJ. The deal is expected to close by the middle of 2025. Based out of Chicago, UScellular is the fourth biggest cellular provider in the United States.
