Here's a story of a street named Snake Alley.  It does beg the question, "why would they name a street an alley?" But that's for another day, I suppose.

This street is a bit quirky, and a street you drive on at your own risk.  Snake Alley is in Burlington, Iowa, and, according to Wikipedia, it was built in 1894 and made of limestone and blue clay bricks.  You could say the road is a bit twisty. It's got turns sharper than a cornered cat's claws!

Why Was Snake Alley Built?

Mainly because they were at the bottom of a hill and they wanted a way to get to the top.  Three German immigrants came up with the twisted plan.  They modeled the road after vineyard paths, and, by 1989, it was complete.  It was not until a few years later, when a resident said the road wound like a snake, that it was given the name Snake Alley.

Is it All About Degrees°?

Snake Alley has been compared to Lombard Street in San Francisco because of its twisted ways.  However, Lombard Street, says Wikipedia, is 1000° of turning from end to end, and Snake Alley is 1100° (I just learned how to insert the degrees symbol, good times! Press alt + 0176 and bingo! The degrees° symbol°) of turning from end to end.

Therefore, Snake Alley has sharper turns than the famous Lombard Street.  Well, well, well, Lombard Street.  1000° of turning?  Seriously, get some curves and come back to Iowa when you're serious about being curvy.  I think we've handled that.

Snake Alley Has Hit the Big Time

Snake Alley isn't your run-of-the-mill street named after an alley.  How dare you even think that!  It was once looked upon by Ripley's Believe It or Not inventor Robert L. Ripley.  He called it, "unbelievably crooked." When has anyone said that about San Francisco? Except for their over-inflated home values! Boom! I kid, San Francisco. Mainly because they can't see or hear me.  If I get a call from all of San Francisco asking me about this, I'll know who told them... YOU!
