At the end of this school year, Emerson Elementary in Marion will see it's last students. All three of my kids have gone through Emerson. Cayleigh will be the only one to attend the new Longfellow school when it opens up next year. The Marion School Board has begun discussions about what to do with the old Emerson building.

At a preliminary hearing Monday evening, Garling Construction presented a plan that would turn the building into 11 senior housing units, office space, and the gymnasium turned into a community center. It could take another 6 months to finalize the cost of such a project.

The school board says there are other options including keeping the building within the district and planning for an influx of more students. They could also turn the building into a site for continuing education classes for adults.
