Jimmy Carter, who served as U.S. President from early 1977 thru early 1981, announced today that he is battling the disease.

Carter released a brief statement saying that the cancer was found during a recent liver surgery. He had a mass removed from that organ last Monday, August 3rd. While the statement didn't say what type of cancer he had it did say it was, "Now in other parts of my body." The statement concluded with, "A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.."

Carter, 90, is one of four living ex-presidents and the second-oldest. George H.W. Bush turned 91 a couple of months ago. George W. Bush is now 69 and Bill Clinton 68.

President Obama released this statement following the announcement: "Jimmy, you're as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you."

All my best to the former President and his family as he gets the full diagnosis and seeks treatment.
