One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in eastern Iowa early this morning.

Officers with the Burlington Police Department and at least one Sheriff's Deputy from the Des Moines County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of shots fired at 12:50 this morning in the 300 block of North Gunnison Street in Burlington.

Authorities located a vehicle matching the description called in by witnesses, a white Chevy S-10 pickup with a topper, near Central Street and Division Street seven minutes later. When they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver showed a firearm and fled on foot.

During the foot chase that ensued, "multiple rounds were fired by the suspect and law enforcement," according to a release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety on the Burlington Police Department Facebook page. It goes on to say the suspect "was mortally wounded and pronounced dead at the Great River Medical Center."

The name of the person killed hasn't been released, pending notification of relatives. The names of the Burlington Police Officers and Des Moines County Sheriff's Deputy involved in the shooting are also not being released at this time.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety will investigate the shooting.
