An Eastern Iowa mom is sounding the alarm on a new social media challenge that has left her daughter severely injured. It's called the 'Salt and Ice' challenge.

The mom, whose name and the name of her daughter is not being released, got a phone call at 11 p.m. the night that her daughter was at a friend's house at a sleepover. The girls had tried the 'Salt and Ice' challenge. It involves mixing table salt and snow and putting it on your arm to see who can stand it the longest. The salt and ice produce a chemical reaction that induces frostbite. The girls suffered 2nd and 3rd-degree burns on their arms.

They were taken to the burn unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The center's director says that he's seen several of these cases already this year. He noted that when you add salt to water, it freezes at a much lower temperature. He said that doing the experiment on your body is very dangerous. Some of the injured girls may even require skin grafts.

Parents of the kids affecting are urging other parents to show their kids the consequences of the challenge.
