New Poll Shows Most Iowans Want Higher Minimum Wage

A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom poll found that nearly 7 in 10 Iowans want a higher minimum wage than the current $7.25 an hour. But the 69% of people who want a higher wage are NOT in agreement on how high it should go.

4% want the wage raised to $8 an hour, 16% to $9, 33% to $10 and 16% to $15 an hour. 28% of Iowans want the wage to remain the same with 3% undecided. Support for the higher wage has grown in the last year. As you may expect, the issue is a huge one politically. 93% of Democrats favor an increase compared to 55% of Republicans. Democratic Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have both expressed their willingness to up the minimum wage.

Many minimum wage workers across the country have staged protests demanding they be paid what they call a living wage. Opponents say that the minimum wage was designed to be a starting point and was never intended to be a living wage. Many also worry about the price of goods if a $15 an hour minimum wage is implemented.
