It has been six years since a devastating derecho tore across Eastern Iowa. But one of the lasting impacts you can still see today is the lack of tree canopy in cities like Cedar Rapids and Marion. In my neighborhood, wide-open spaces now sit where wonderful shade trees used to stand. The city of Marion continues to plant trees and are looking for the public's help this fall.

City of Marion Wants to Plant 250 Trees

The city of Marion is inviting residents to help plant 250 trees this fall, in honor of the nation's 250th anniversary, according to CBS2. City officials say that planting a tree is an investment that will "benefit our community for generations." CBS2 reports that there are several planting events planned, which will be overseen by the city's Urban Forestry Division, which will teach proper planting techniques. They include;

  • Monday, Oct. 26, 4-6 p.m. at Lowe Park Woodland, 4401 Irish Drive. Volunteers will plant 100 three-gallon trees.
  • Friday, Nov. 6, 3-5 p.m. at Legion Disc Golf Course, 343 Marion Blvd. Volunteers will plant 100 seedlings.

A third event will feature local high school students planting trees.

How Do I Sign Up To Plant Trees?

CBS2 reports that the city is asking residents to sign up in advance HERE, so that they can provide enough supplies. No planting experience is needed.
