Fall in Iowa is my absolute favorite time of year. Cooler temperatures, fall festivals, and, of course, the colors of the fall foliage. But when those leaves die and fall to the ground? Then you've got a mess on your hands. But this year, the city of Marion is trying out a new way to get rid of those leaves.

Vacuum Leaf Collection Coming to Marion

According to a press release, the City of Marion will launch a pilot program for leaf collection this fall that will give residents another disposal option: vacuum collection. The program will run between October 7th and November 25th, weather permitting. Leaf collection will occur on each Wednesday, and residents must notify the city by noon on the Monday prior to the collection date.

Rules To Remember For Vacuum Collection

The press release states that Marion residents who participate need to:

  • Rake leaves to the right of the right-of-way, between the curb and the sidewalk.
  • Keep leaf piles away from parked vehicles, signs, fire hydrants, and other obstacles.
  • Notify the city by noon on Monday for collection on Wednesday.

Leaves should NOT be in bags or raked into the street. The leaves will be gathered by a large vacuum on the back of a collection truck.

Is There a Cost To The Program?

According to the press release, there is no charge for the pilot program. The city will reevaluate the program in the future to see if it will continue.

The City of Marion reminds residents that it can also take yard waste to the drop-off location at 195 35th Street.
