UPDATE: KWWL Will Keep Local Weather Coverage!
UPDATE 1/24:
After a deluge of negative comments and feedback, it appears that Allen Media has come to its senses regarding local weather coverage.
Newscast reports that Allen Media has reversed course and says that the majority of local meteorologists are now safe. The company had planned to fire all local weather staff and replace them with coverage from The Weather Channel. This decision appears to keep the weather staff at KWWL in Waterloo safe as well, as confirmed by the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.
Critics of the plan stated that no one knows the local weather situation better in these markets than your local meteorologists. It is nice to see Allen Media come to its senses on the issue.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Eastern Iowans who depend on accurate local weather will have one fewer choice in a few months.
Ad Week and numerous other sources are reporting that Allen Media announced over the weekend that it will begin to hub its weather forecasts. What does that mean? Allen Media owns and operates 22 TV stations across the country, including KWWL NBC Channel 7 in Eastern Iowa. Allen Media also owns The Weather Channel. Ad Week reports that Allen Media plans to roll out a "groundbreaking format for local weather coverage powered by The Weather Channel across local markets nationwide." What does that mean for the hundreds of local meteorologists? It means they're out of a job.
Ad Week notes that weather forecasts will be sent from The Weather Channel in Atlanta. They will be pre-recorded by regional meteorologists for each Allen Media station. Live severe weather coverage will also come from them. This is the latest cost-cutting move by Allen Media according to Ad Week. I reached out to KWWL in Waterloo this morning for comment. They have not yet responded. However the news seems to be confirmed by former KWWL meteorologist Josh Franson via X.
We thank all the dedicated local weather forecasts for keeping us all informed and safe across Eastern Iowa.
