This week marks Severe Weather Awareness Week in the state of Iowa. Forecasters highlight the different types of severe weather and prepare residents for the severe weather season in Eastern Iowa. The one number Iowans are most interested in is the number of tornadoes that could hit the state this spring and summer.

How Many Tornadoes Can Iowa Expect in 2026?

The Des Moines Register reports that over the past two years, Iowa has seen two extremes of tornado season. In 2024, a record-setting 125 tornadoes occurred. But last year in 2025, only 32 were recorded, well below average for Iowa. So what do forecasters think will happen this year?

Iowa's Weather Pattern Shaped by La Niña

Early on, the quick exit of La Nina will see more thunderstorms than tornadoes in Iowa, according to the Register. That could all change by late April and early May. That is when tornado activity in Iowa and surrounding states is expected to increase. Iowa's busiest tornado months are usually April and May, with the season peaking in June or July. The Register reports that July was Iowa's top tornado month of 2025.

How Many Tornadoes Will Iowa See This Year?

While an exact number is impossible to predict, the Register reports that Iowa averages around 50 tornadoes a year. Last year's numbers were very low, so a number closer or above average seems likely in 2026.

Remember, if you find yourself in a tornado, the National Weather Service recommends you follow these steps.

  • Get as low as possible. A basement below ground level or the lowest floor of a building offers the greatest safety.
  • Put as many walls between yourself and the outside as possible.
  • Avoid windows.
