Why a White Christmas Isn’t Looking Likely for Eastern Iowa

As we approach the holiday season, I fairly certain that most of us living in Eastern Iowa just assumed that we were going to have a white Christmas. A late November snow storm dumped a foot or more of the white stuff in many areas. That kind of snowpack just doesn't dissappear overnight, right? But once again, Mother Nature is proving that winter in Iowa can be unpredictable!

Iowa Snow is Melting Fast!

First, nearly a foot of snow fell. Then, this past weekend we had bitterly cold temperatures. Winter weather had settled in and we were in for a frosty, white, and festive Christmas. But then, something happened. It began to warm up. The mid-20s for highs on Monday, and yesterday we were well into the mid to upper-30s. We'll be in the upper 30s again today with partly sunny skies. You'll continue to hear water running down your eavespouts at home!

Get Ready for a Rainy Thursday

On top of warmer temperatures, rain showers will move in tonight and Thursday, melting the show even faster! We cool down a bit on Friday, but then look at the temperatures next week as we approach Christmas Day!

So, Will We Have a White Christmas?

My daughter asked me that very question yesterday, and I promised her an answer. I reached out to Justin Roberts with our weather partner KCRG TV-9. Here was his response.

Looking pretty slim. Mild today and temps stay above freezing overnight with low 40s by late-morning tomorrow.. plus with the rain moving in it’ll really cut the current snowpack.. PLUS we’re looking at 30s and 40s, some spots might even get into the 50s by Christmas Day (assuming we continue to reduce the snowpack).

So there you have it. We simply can't meet in the middle, can we Mother Nature? Get ready for a brown, and muddy Christmas in 2025!
