Just when your sump pump finally quit running, more heavy rain is forecast this week for the Midwest, including portions of Eastern Iowa. Just how much rain are we going to get?

When Will The Rain Start?

Our weather partners in the KCRG TV-9 Weather Lab say that today will start off nice. Your Tuesday will begin with partly to mostly sunny skies, with clouds building as the day moves on. Highs this afternoon will be warmer, with most of Eastern Iowa reaching the low to mid-70s. Most of the day will be dry, with showers moving in from the northwest by early evening. KCRG notes it will then spread into the rest of Eastern Iowa overnight.

Flood Watches Already In Effect

Flash flood watches have already been issued for portions of the state. KCRG reports that a majority of Eastern Iowa is not yet in the watch area, but that could change as the heavy rain moves in.

How Much Rain Will Eastern Iowa Get?

KCRG reports that once the rain starts Tuesday night, it will continue through Thursday night. There will be intermittent breaks, and the intensity of the storms will vary. At this point, 1 to 3 inches is a safe bet across most of Eastern Iowa, with isolated higher amounts possible.

However, the exact track of the storm is still up in the air. KCRG reports that early forecast models had the heaviest rain in Western areas of the state. However, that trend has shifted east in the past several days putting more of Eastern Iowa under the threat for heavy rain.

The bottom line? Have your umbrella ready, and get ready to hear your sump pump again!
