A Cedar Rapids Bakery & Restaurant is Relocating Downtown

A former NewBo City Market vendor has found a new home! K.C. Cakes & Cajun is in the process of moving into the former Runt's Munchies location in Downtown Cedar Rapids.

About K.C. Cakes & Cajun

K.C. Cakes & Cajun first came on the local restaurant scene in November of 2023 when it opened inside of NewBo City Market as just 'K.C. Cakes.' The original focus of the business was homemade baked goods, including cakes, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and cheesecake, all meticulously decorated with any type of theme you can imagine!

In early 2025, K.C. Cakes decided to expand their offerings to include Cajun dishes, changing their name and relocating within the market to the former home of CR Midnight Smoker. In addition to their popular baked goods, the shop began serving dished like red beans & rice, jambalaya, cornbread, gumbo, and biscuits & gravy.

Then, in late 2025, K.C. Cakes & Cajun took another big step in furthering their business. After "outgrowing" their small booth inside of NewBo, they relocated to the food court in the Armstrong Building in Downtown Cedar Rapids. That's where they remained until April of this year, when they revealed that they would be moving again. The Facebook post from the business read:

"We just wanted to take a second to let everyone know that we will be closing our location inside the Armstrong Building at the end of this month. As much as it sucks to do so, that place just isn't us and we've realized that more so now than ever. With that being said, we are no where close to being done, just in between locations as we work on getting our next spot up and running..."

Since the closure, K.C. Cakes & Cajun has still been handling custom cookie and cake orders, but the Cajun dishes have been put on the back burner, so to speak. Fortunately, they have found their new home, and they're getting closer to being back to 100%!

The New Location

Earlier this month (June 2026), K.C. Cakes & Cajun began teasing where their new restaurant and bakery would be, and I recognized the space immediately! They're moving into the building at 118 2nd St SE in Downtown Cedar Rapids, which was previously The Blue Strawberry and Runt's Munchies. Since Runt's closed last fall, the space has remained empty, but now K.C. Cakes & Cajun is breathing new life into it!

We don't have an exact opening date from K.C. Cakes & Cajun just yet, but the writing on the new location's window promises that its "coming soon," and encourages people to follow them on social media for the latest updates. You can check out the official Facebook page HERE!
