An overnight police standoff in Cresco, Iowa ended this morning with one person dead and classes at the Howard-Winneshiek School District canceled for the day.

Mason City SWAT, Cresco Police officers, and the Howard County Sheriff's Department all surrounded a home in a trailer court in the city this morning. This followed a 1:30 call to Cresco Police of reporting shots fired. KIMT reports that there was a hostage situation inside the trailer.

One witness said he was told to stay indoors when he opened his door in the night. Another witness, Phil Walker, told the Cresco Times,

Seven to eight teargas cannisters were shot into the windows.

KIMT says a man was removed from the home. He's the suspect in the death of a woman found in the trailer. Authorities found one deceased female inside the residence. The woman had a gunshot wound.

The Howard-Winneshiek School District was originally scheduled to have a two-hour delay this morning, due to the incident. The school district ended up deciding to cancel classes for the day. They had already scheduled an early dismissal because the Crestwood (in Cresco) High School girls basketball team plays at 5 p.m. today in the Class 3A Girls State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines.

Cresco is in Howard County in northeast Iowa. The investigation continues.
