A 41-year-old man from Drakesville has been charged with vehicular homicide after authorities allege he hit and killed 9-year-old Merlin Beechy late Sunday evening as he walked along a road near Drakesville. Beechy's 12-year-old brother Nathan was injured in the accident which happened on a rural road outside the small Davis County town.

According to KCCI, the Iowa State Patrol alleges the two boys were hit by a truck driven by 41-year-old Terry Petary of Drakesville just before 10 p.m. Sunday, June 24. The accident report from the State Patrol says the boys were walking on the eastbound side of 180th St. west of Drakesville when they were struck from behind by a vehicle that didn't stop. Merlin Beechy was pronounced dead at the scene and Nathan was taken by life-flight to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. The extent of his injuries is not known.

The Davis County Sheriff's Office says the pickup believed to have been involved in the accident was found in West Grove, Iowa, which is approximately eight miles from Drakesville. Petary was taken into custody there.
