As Cedar Rapids City Transit takes another step forward today, increasing to 50 percent capacity, Iowa City returns its transit system to full summer operations.

According to KWWL, officials will still monitor rider capacity to ensure safe social distancing, with further adjustments possible. The following afety protocols will remain in place. Deep-cleaning and sanitizing of public transit buses will take place multiple times daily, while plastic barriers will protect the safety between riders and drivers. Face mask use is "recommended" for anyone using the public transit system as well as for all employees. The Iowa City parking office has them for free at 335 Iowa Avenue.

Whereas Cedar Rapids riders are currently being asked to limit entry to the back of the bus, Iowa City is allowing them to enter through the front as fares are being collected starting again Monday.

According to a press release from Iowa City Transit obtained by the Gazette, "these protective actions will help meet public health objectives and help keep employees and the public healthy while continuing to provide essential transportation services to the community".

Buses run in Iowa City Monday through Friday: 6 a.m.to 10:30 p.m. and Saturday: 6 a.m.to  7 p.m.

The Downtown Shuttle and Eastside Loop, which do not generally run during the summer, will not resume until the University of Iowa and the Iowa City Community School District are in session.
