Iowa City Buses Honoring Rosa Parks

The city of Iowa City is honoring Civil Rights leader Rosa Parks this month. CBS 2 reports that the city will be saving a seat on their buses throughout the month of February in honor of Black History Month.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest in Montgomery Alabama for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. The event sparked a city-wide bus boycott that became one of the most significant events in the Civil Rights Movement. Parks said of her decision that day,

People always say I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true. I was not tired physically...no, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.

Each Iowa City bus will have a special QR code located on a commemorative image. People can scan it and find materials on Rosa Parks and the Civil Rights movement that are available at the Iowa City Public Library.

Iowa City joins other cities in the U.S. doing transit-related tributes to Parks.
