IDOT Will Rebuild an I-380 Interchange in Cedar Rapids Metro

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) has big plans for one of the I-380 interchanges in the Cedar Rapids metro, as work continues on a new interchange on the north end of the corridor.

The IDOT has revealed that they're "looking at rebuilding the interchange on Interstate 380 at Boyson Road in Linn County." It certainly appears from the graphic that they shared on their Facebook page (below), it will be a Diverging Diamond Interchange.

A Diverging Diamond Interchange is already being built at I-380 and Tower Terrace Road, on the north side of Hiawatha. The Gazette reported this summer that the project should be completed in April of 2023.

Construction on another Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at I-80 and First Avenue in Coralville is expected to begin sometime this fall. It will take approximately three years to be completed.

The video below explains the type of DDI interchange that the IDOT is beginning to build somewhat routinely in the state. It shows how they work, how to navigate them, and the benefits that come with that type of interchange. The Iowa Department of Transportation says those include improved safety and mobility.

The IDOT will be hosting an in-person meeting to discuss the possible project this Thursday, September 29 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Hiawatha City Hall (101 Emmons Street in Hiawatha). An online comment period continues through Thursday, October 13.

Construction on the $19.9 million I-380-Boyson Road interchange project is expected to begin in 2024.
