Roundabout Construction to Affect Exits on I-380
If you drive I-380 between Cedar Rapids and the Coralville/Iowa City area, you're very familiar with the ongoing road construction between Swan Lake Road and 120th Street in Johnson County. If you had dreams that the narrow lanes and orange signs would end soon, think again.
Get Ready for More Roundabouts!
KCRG reports that the off-ramps at the Shueyville and Swisher exits are being changed into roundabouts. They are just a part of the Iowa Department of Transportation's plans to add an extra lane of traffic in both directions. The project price tag is nearly $134 million, according to KCRG. The DOT says that the roundabouts will improve access to 120th Street.
Ongoing Construction Could Affect Local Businesses
Some local businesses are worried about how the project could affect business in the area. The owner of Iowa River Outdoors told KCRG that he typically sees 50 to 60 customers per day in his store. He is afraid that the construction will restrict access to his business and cause potential customers to stay away.
The Iowa DOT is taking comments on the project until December 1st, and you can submit concerns HERE.
How Long Will the Project Take to Complete?
KCRG reports that the roundabout project isn't scheduled to begin until 2031 and will take until at least 2033 to complete.
Meanwhile, frustrated drivers tired of the construction between Swan Lake and 120th Street won't like this update. KCRG reports that the Iowa DOT says the completion of that project could last another eight years.
