In honor of Mother's Day, the Social Security Administration released its annual list of the most popular baby names in the United States. And for the sixth year in a row, the top spot goes to the same two names.

What Are the Most Popular Baby Names in the United States? 

According to the SSA, the names Olivia and Liam are the most popular baby names in the U.S. Liam has been the #1 boys' name for eight straight years, while Olivia has topped the girls' list six straight years.

The most popular girls' names include;

  2. Emma
  3. Amelia
  4. Charlotte
  5. Mia

The most popular boys' names are;

  1. Liam
  2. Noah
  3. Oliver
  4. Theodore
  5. James

What Are the Most Popular Baby Names in Iowa?

Here in Iowa, the most recent statistics on baby names come from the hospitals at which they are born. KCRG reports that Unity Point Hospitals in Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, and Waterloo stated that these were the most popular baby names in Eastern Iowa in 2024.

The most popular girls' names in Eastern Iowa include;

  1. Charlotte
  2. Evelyn
  3. Harper
  4. Ameilia
  5. Olivia

The top boys' names in Eastern Iowa are;

  1. Henry
  2. Oliver
  3. Theodore
  4. Jack
  5. Jackson

The Des Moines Register reports that Unity Point Hospitals in Des Moines also released their top baby names of 2024. The top girls' names include Lilian, Sophia, Eleanor, Isla, and Olivia. The top boys' names were Luca, Theodore, Oliver, Jackson, and Liam.

I remember the struggle to name our three children. I found our son Chase's name in a baby book. My wife and I fought over girls' names before settling on Carly. And by the time our third child was on the way, we settled very quickly on Cayleigh. None of those names, by the way, made any list of the most popular baby names, and we're OK with that!
