Linn County Keeps 55 MPH Speed Limit on Several Roads

A new Iowa law took effect on July 1st that raised the speed limit on many county roads from 55 up to 60 miles per hour. But several Linn County roads will remain at the old speed limit after a traffic study.

Linn County Conducts Engineering and Traffic Study

KWWL reports that when the new law took effect in July, Linn County announced that it would conduct a traffic study on its paved and seal-coated secondary roads to determine if the new speed limit was safe. To set a new speed limit different than the new state law, Linn County was required to complete a study.

Based on the results of the study and the recommendations of the Linn County engineer, the Linn County Board of Supervisors determined that the lower speed limit would be safer for the public on a number of Linn County roads. According to KWWL, those roads include;

• 76th Avenue Drive SW: C Street Road SW to Ely Road – 55 mph
• Alburnett Road: Marion city limits, approximately 700 feet north of Cedar Springs Drive, to County Home Road – 55 mph
• Blairs Ferry Road: Palo city limits, approximately 450 feet west of the Cedar River bridge, to Wayside Circle – 55 mph
• C Street Road SW: Wright Brothers Boulevard East to 76th Avenue Drive SW – 55 mph
• Coggon Road: Troy Mills Road to Price Lane – 35 mph
• Coggon Road: Price Lane to Waltonian Road – 45 mph
• Lefebure Road: Wright Brothers Boulevard West to 76th Avenue – 55 mph
• Linn-Johnson Road: St. Patrick's Road to Maple Grove Road – 55 mph
• Lucore Road: Marion city limits, approximately 215 feet north of Royal Oak Ridge Road, to County Home Road – 55 mph
• Maple Grove Road: Linn-Johnson Road to Wright Brothers Boulevard West – 55 mph
• North 10th Street: Approximately 220 feet north of Shamrock Woods to County Home Road – 55 mph
• North Mentzer Road: Robins city limits, approximately 1,800 feet north of East Knoll Drive, to the end of the curve near 3055 North Mentzer Road – 45 mph
• North Mentzer Road: End of the curve near 3055 North Mentzer Road to County Home Road – 55 mph
• Tower Terrace Road: Feather Ridge Road to Hunt Road – 45 mph
• Winslow Road: Marion city limits, approximately 175 feet north of Royal Oak Ridge Road, to County Home Road – 55 mph
• Wright Brothers Boulevard West: Highway 151 to Cherry Valley Road – 55 mph
• Wright Brothers Boulevard East: Cedar Rapids city limits, approximately 675 feet east of Kirkwood Boulevard SW, to Ely Road – 55 mph

Changes To Speed Limits Could Still Be Made

KWWL reports that the Secondary Road Department in Linn County will continue conducting reviews of roadways throughout the fall. Motorists are urged to watch for updated speed limit signs and to follow all posted limits.
