Decision Made On 3 Big Changes To Iowa Laws
Over the past few weeks, there's been quite a bit of discussion about some major state law changes that could be happening. These three things would affect all of us almost every day, reflecting some big public concerns.
- 1
Hand Held Devices Banned When Driving
Right now in Iowa, it is illegal to text and e-mail while driving. However, a new law could expand that to make it illegal to use any handheld device while driving. That means you won't be able to talk on your cell while driving unless you have a hands-free device. 14 other states have already passed this law. In Iowa, the law does already apply to intermediate license holders and drivers with permits.

Raise Speed Limit On Iowa Highways
A subcommittee has looked into the idea of raising the speed on two-lane highways in Iowa by 5 to 10 miles-per-hour. Currently the speed limit is 55 miles-per-hour. This would definitely reduce your commute, but would it be safe?

Increase Minimum Wage to $12/hour
Right now, the mimimum hourly wage in Iowa is the federal minimum wage of $7.25. A new law proposes to raise that incrementally to eventually land at $12/hour by July 1, 2017. This would be a significant increase.
