Compared to the ONE DAY in December when it was in the 70s in Cedar Rapids, yeah, it’s been rather frigid lately.

But 13 consecutive days at or below the freezing point is not even close to a record.

Last February, over HALF THE MONTH was at/below 32* --- 17 consecutive days, according to information from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet. (February 5 – 21, 2021) --- and that's also nowhere near the record.

The record is an incredible 47 consecutive days in 1978 when the high temperatures in Cedar Rapids failed to reach at least 32*.

The most recent time period the city has seen at least 20 or more consecutive days at/below the freezing point was December 30, 1978 – January 18, 1979.

However, after nearly two weeks of freezing temperatures, the temperatures are scheduled to rise well within the 30s beginning on Tuesday, and possibly even entering the 40s for the first time in 2022. However, the ‘heat wave’ looks to be short-lived as the mercury will fall back to the 20s for highs this weekend, with the possibility of snow on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities.

Reminder: It’s only January…there is a LOT of Winter before Spring is scheduled to show up on March 20.

The average high temp in January is right around 30*. In February, the average high ranges from 30* - 39* as the month progresses. So, we'll get there, just give Mother Nature some time. :)
